Teaching Opportunities

Occasional (Supply) teachers are very important to us in the Durham District School Board (DDSB). We have many job opportunities throughout the year and if employed, your commitment to the Occasional teacher list is an important part of a vibrant and successful school community. To support you in your role as an Occasional teacher we offer a number of professional opportunities that you will be eligible for once you are hired. We are committed to equity and inclusion in the recruitment and hiring of qualified staff who reflect the diversity of our region. We encourage submissions from candidates who represent the various dimensions of diversity.

The minimum requirement is registration in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers. You may apply before you receive your Certification of Registration. Simply indicate that this is in progress on your resume and cover letter. A teaching position will likely be conditional upon supplying the documents later.

Criminal Reference Check and Vulnerable Sector component

Our policy requires that a Criminal Reference Check with the Vulnerable Sector component issued within six months be presented as a condition of employment. Checks older than six months are not acceptable.

Supply teaching and supply list

Being on the supply list at DDSB provides you the opportunity to expand your skills in different assignments. As a supply teacher you are employed by the DDSB. Assignments could be for a day, weeks or months. You work to cover teacher absences. When one assignment is done you move to another one which may be the same or a different location.

How can I make my application package stand out in order to improve my chances for an interview?

Due to the high volume of applicants we encourage you to ensure that your application portfolio is as current and complete as possible. This includes at minimum your cover letter, resume, two letters of professional reference, undergrad transcripts and completed practice teaching reports (new grad teacher applicants) or recent teacher performance appraisal (experienced teachers).

What additional qualification (AQ) Courses are most valuable to the Board?

We encourage you to pursue additional qualification courses that are of personal interest to you that will further develop your professional teaching practices.

How does the Board view teaching experience overseas?

The Board recognizes that teaching abroad offers valuable teaching experiences for new grads. The application process upon your return to Ontario remains the same as any teacher applying to the boards' occasional roster. Note your teaching experience abroad on your resume along with any teaching evaluations and professional letters of reference.

Do you expect a portfolio at the interview?

Candidates are not required to produce a teaching portfolio when attending an interview. We will send you details of what you can bring to the interview with your interview invitation. If you wish to bring a portfolio with you to make tangible your experiences when responding to interview questions you are encouraged to do so.

If I am unsuccessful in my first interview attempt as an occasional teacher how should I proceed?

If you are unsuccessful in your initial occasional teaching interview you will be eligible to re-apply after 6 to 12 months have passed. Be sure to update your documentation as they expire (i.e., Professional letters of reference)
